Shortly the Federal Register will publish White House approved changes to federal standards within the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The landmark civil rights law passed with strong bipartisan support in 1990. The new rules would set even more stringent standards and address some issues for the first time, issues that would help address the challenges faced by an aging population.
While the US Chamber of Commerce believes these changes would be onerous and costly to American businesses, advocates counter that the changes still do not go far enough. With more than 51 million Americans struggling with some form of disability, this legislation will not be going away.
At Chain Store Age magazine's annual trade show in 2000, SPECS, I was co-presenter for a session on handling ADA upgrades and remediation. To obtain a copy of that presentation, Click Here.
