Unethical or questionable behavior by employees has become somewhat easier to detect because of today's heavy reliance on internet technology.
A survey by Proofpoint Inc. (Chicago Tribune, June 15, 2008) indicated that 27% of companies have terminated an employee for violating email policies. This comes from the increase of organizations, now 41%, who hire staff to review employee email correspondence. Still another 44% have investigated a leak of confidential information through email channels. Disciplinary action has been brought against employees in 14% of polled companies for leaking information to the media.
Part of your ongoing employee training and communication must be to state your organization's email and internet policies, and to also let employees know their activities could be subject to remote review.
