Today's Wall Street Journal published a survey which said that 97% of respondents acknowlege their companies have a formalized succession plan for senior management, but only 3% say their organizations have a talent pipeline for the rest of their management needs. It seems to me that managers are being held accountable for sales, cost controla nd profits, but are being given a free ride on developing bench strength talent as well as assuring they have a replacement for their jobs. You know the old saying: a person rated a 10 hires a person rated a 9 who hires a person rated an 8 who hires a person rated a 7, and so on. Isn't the greatest mark of a true leader and strong manager the number of people they develop and help get promoted?
