A recent Hudson Highland Group survey found that 40% of managers believe that internal promotions are the best way to fill open positions. More importantly, the survey also said that 73% of the managers reported that their company typically looks at the current employee base first to fill those open positions. While this approach has some value, organizations can foster stale strategic thinking and stifle innovation when too many people are promoted from within. Think about all of the fresh perspectives and ideas that are available from the outside. Think about all of the different ways of approaching business problems that can be examined for possible use! Examine the backgrounds of your teams. If at least half of your experienced employees have not come from other companies within the past five years, your organization may fast be approaching a stale state.
